Dated: 2 Mar 2009Posted by adminCategory: Home

Reduce your stress in one hour.

Are you exhausted? Stressed out? Do you take time for yourself? Is your work and stress piled high on your neck and shoulders? Are you having trouble sleeping because your hips and lower back are too stiff from sitting at work?

You work too hard. You have a family too. You have no time for yourself and you’re getting headaches from exhaustion and lack of sleep.

The American Institute of Stress reports as much as 75- 90% of doctor visits are related to stress. The workplace has been identified as the single greatest source of that stress. We are making ourselves sick.

I am in the massage business to help people just like you, to relieve your pain, exhaustion and sleeplessness. I use integrative techniques and a customized approach to meet your specific needs.

You might be someone who relies on feeling good in your body, mind and soul to do your good work. Artist, Actress, Therapist, or Writer. My clients have often referred to my work as an attitude adjustment and that they feel more fully in themselves. Massage can be maintenance to the creative soul.

Perhaps you are an athlete, maybe a professional athlete, or someone who has to pay close attention to running, bicycling or lifting weights regularly. Your body is working hard for you. Those muscles get tight. They need to be stretched, loosened and released for you to run farther, bicycle longer or lift weights to your full potential.

When I hear you exhale from relief, I’ve hit all the right points, stretched the muscles that hurt, released that horrible knot in your shoulder, I am filled with happiness for you and feel fulfilled in my work.

We can get you feeling better and performing at your best.

Change your life with regular massage.

Kin

I make way to the outskirts of London on a one-man mission. I’m on my way to meet up with Lu, Viv
and Rich from up and coming unsigned band .Kin. My previous encounter with this merry bunch was
during the SOMA SOMA Artists’ Party at the Blag Club, Notting Hill, where they played a refreshingly
chilled acoustic set. I picked up their impressive 2 CD demo and it served as a worthy soundtrack to
my journey, leaving me wanting to hear more as I made my way to their rehearsal studio in the
wilderness of leafy, suburban High Barnet.

.Kin have just completed a bumper 25 gigs around London. They are now back in the studio
rehearsing new material for next year when I caught up with them. Before we sit down for a chat, they
play a few new tunes for me. “I should warn you… it’s pretty loud!” drummer Rich tells me before he
opens up with a huge cymbal crash for their first song ‘Airborn.’ Unfortunately half way through, Lu’s
amp dies inexplicably but without any fuss she soldiers on to acoustic guitar amp personifying .Kin’s
no nonsense approach to their music. They follow the well- crafted energetic Airborn with laid back
‘Nothing Left to Learn’.

Kin started life in Leeds where Lu (guitarist, songwriter and vocals) set up the original band while at
school. However, the band initially fizzled out only to be resurrected by Lu some years later. She
attended Leeds college of music and recruited a new line-up. However frustrated with venues
shutting down in Leeds, Lu took the decision to come down to London to complete her studies. She
soon found bass player Viv early in 2002 after putting up an ad and drummer Chris completed the
new .Kin line up. However things didn’t go as smoothly as planned. “We ended up ended up
rehearsing a lot with out doing any gigs,” Viv tells me “And soon we had to find a replacement for
Chris.”

Unphased, Lu and Viv turned this difficult situation to their advantage. Whilst looking for the right
drummer Viv and Lu had time to perfect their acoustic sound as a duo. “We’ve got two sides. We do
the acoustic thing and we’ve been doing that for ages and didn’t want to lose that when we started
to do live gigs as it’s always been part of what we are.”

One of their 2 CDs features their warm acoustic sound. It exemplifies Lu’s guitar playing not to
mention a voice that most would die for. Her voices lies somewhere in the ether next to Courtney
Love’s, Gwen Stefani’s and Pink’s. Lu tells me that “musically the stuff I’ve loved has always been the
Manic Street Preachers, Smashing Pumpkins- anything alternative”. She counts James Dean
Bradfield and Courtney Love among her vocal influences. She’s definitely carved out an original
vocal sound that soars above the guitar, bass and drums.

I mention that I’ve noticed that their sound also incorporates hints of blues and sounds of the Deep
South. I find out that this is not something that they’ve deliberately incorporated. “What I’ve noticed
is that a lot of the bands I listen to haven’t directly influenced what I play,” Viv says, “but looking back
on it, it’s the people that influence THEM that influence the way I play”.

In Christmas 2003, Viv and Lu got in touch with Rich, a drummer whose previously played rock and
jazz and it wasn’t long before they started gigging in London. We then start talking about the demo
and I ask if separate acoustic and ‘electric’ CDs was a conscious choice. “It’s funny because there
are some songs that just will not work unless they are played this way (acoustically)” Lu says. This
explains the jungle of guitars that I see when I first arrive as .Kin pay at lot of attention to their
sound. They can seamlessly move from a high octane rock sound to the more sensitive and tender
treatment of their songs.

Unfortunately after 2 songs, Rich had to make a rapid departure however without doubt he let his
drumming do all the talking moving effortlessly from all out, in your face cymbal pounding, to more
carefully and concentrated snare drum work. Viv fills me in on Rich’s background. “Rich was in a
Greek Rock band, they called themselves Velvet Quicksand and he also played with a couple of jazz
bands while studying engineering at Imperial College, London. When he joined .Kin he was more
rock than jazz and since joining .Kin, he’s become a little more seasoned”.

Viv describes himself as “a straight laced bass player” and since meeting Lu, he’s been stretched
“playing chords, inversions, harmonics and arpeggios”. The combination of lacking a drummer and
Lu’s challenging writing has given Viv the opportunity to raise his game. Viv tells me that his bass
teacher taught him bass lines of Seventies Soul bands like Sister Sledge, Gloria Gaynor and George
Clinton, however it wasn’t the music he was listening to at the time. He identifies much more with the
likes of Guns and Roses, Metallica and Motley Crue. “When the grunge scene happened, I was
heavily into Nirvana and Pearl Jam”. Since joining Lu, he’s realized that his bass playing has come full
circle back to where he started…so those funk chops really did come in handy in the end.

.Kin combine infectious grooves underpinned by a solid backbeat. Although they have many
influences, their music is unmistakably alternative rock. They recently supported new band Evanfly
last year, which they describe as a “definitive experience.” “There’s nothing like playing to a couple
hundred people you don’t know and they like what your doing,” says Viv. When I ask about their
future aspirations I realize that they are deeply passionate about what they do. “It has to work! It
absolutely has to work! – there’s nothing else. There is no other job where you’re getting your soul
fed everyday”.

Thee band all have day jobs; Lu sells guitars and works in a bar, Viv is a compositor (don’t worry I
didn’t know what this was either) mixing special effects and Rich is a engineer. So what’s next for the
band? Having had a marathon year of gigs they’ve decided to take a break. Although Lu writes the
songs it truly a group effort as Viv and Rich’s stamp their own unique imprint on the tunes to make it
quintessentially .Kin. They got a fantastic reception at their last gig at Imperial College and the band
firmly believe that they can tap into the student market.

They’re currently recording some new material over Christmas and will be back early in 2005. .Kin’s
message to readers is “Come see us and talk to us!!” If I were you I would do much more than that. I
would keep an eye on .Kin – they’re going places..
